Magellan’s Cross is one of the main symbols of Roman Catholicism in the Philippines as well as one of Cebu‘s most famous tourist attractions.
An inscription at the foot of Magellan’s cross says:
Magellan’s Cross
This Cross of Tindalo Wood
Encases the Original Cross Planted
By Ferdinand Magellan On This Very Site
April 21, 1521
When we arrived at the shrine, we noticed several women dressed in yellow offering to do prayer dances with different colored candles (each color representing a specific prayer intention — love, peace, health, etc.). We paid P50 for 5 candles which the woman used during the prayer dance.
The cross is in a chapel located just in between the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño and the Cebu City Hall.
