]]>Their coffee is brewed using nothing less than fresh premium coffee beans. You can sense the passion and dedication of the cafe owners in the aroma and taste of their coffee preparations. Maka-happy jud ang kalami sa ilang coffee!
The Forum Cafe not only offers captivating coffee, but also positively delightful food. I think Hubby’s heart skipped a beat when he took his first slice of the croffle in his Croffle Set. Crunchy, flaky croffle drizzled with chocolate and paired with spicy Hungarian sausage and scrambled eggs make a feast of flavors in the mouth!
Also, their Italian carbonara gives you a taste of authentic pasta dish made with eggs, cheese, and bacon, with buttery toasted bread on the side. Paspas ra jud siya nahurot.

What we’re super excited to try next: Dirty Matcha and their rice meals! See the cafe’s menu (as of posting date) below.

]]>The post Taho Ni Mang Andres: Taho All You Want appeared first on DavaoBase.
]]>Good news, taho lovers! You can now enjoy taho with family and friends during your parties and reunions with Taho ni Mang Andres.
In a potluck party we recently attended, one of our couple friends brought a full set of taho goodness — silky taho, sweet syrup, and soft sago, served in classic metal containers!
Super patok sa party! We all had fun scooping our own taho, then adding syrup and sago as we like.
A full set (taho, syrup, and sago) costs P850. You may request for more syrup or sago for an additional P190.
You would need to return the metal containers and the bike (yes, they let you borrow that too) the day after.
Since they do not add preservatives to their products, you need to take the water out from the taho from time to time. Burag si manong magtataho ra jud pud.
If you’re up for just a cup of taho, though, Taho ni Mang Andress has a stall in SM Ecoland.
Syrup Options:
Caramel – P80
Strawberry – P80
Pandan – P80

]]>The post Coffee Maybe: A “Definitely” to Visit in Tagum appeared first on DavaoBase.
]]>See our previous post on what we had for lunch at the Yuyu Cafe and Dessert Shop.
Our next stop was coffee, but with third-wave coffee being the rave these days, we dropped by not one but two coffee shops in Tagum!
First coffee stop: Coffee Maybe.
It’s located in a residential area, so if you’re not from Tagum, you may need to check Google Maps. It’s quite easy to locate, though. Once you’re there, you get to enjoy a nice outdoor area where they provide tables and chairs for groups of coffee lovers to enjoy.
We tried hot Spanish latte. We enjoyed it as it is, but for our friend who loves his coffee strong, an extra espresso shot sealed the deal.
Coffee Maybe’s Hot Coffee:
Americano – P99
Cafe Latte – P115
Spanish – P120
Hazelnut – P125
Caramel – P130
Coffee Maybe’s Iced Coffee:
Vanilla Latte – P120
Spanish Latte – P125
Caramel Macchiato – P130
Cafe Mocha – P135
Ice Cream Latter – P140
They also serve rice meals, breads, and cookies to go with your coffee.
We asked why the shop is named Coffee Maybe, and we were directed to the window art. Apparently, intro to a love story siya.
Guy: Coffee?
Girl: Maybe.
The coffee is good, the place is nice, and the staff are friendly. If you’re in Tagum, it’s a ‘definitely’ to visit Coffee Maybe.

]]>The post Yuyu in Tagum: Worth the Road Trip! appeared first on DavaoBase.
]]>We had a quick but super fun road trip with friends, with no other agenda but to eat good food, have coffee, and enjoy our time together.
Our first stop: Yuyu!
Yuyu has been around for a while and it usually lands among the top recommendations when you ask friends from Tagum where to eat in the city.
As a group, we had:
Lemon Butter Bangus – P260
This is from their Breakfast All Day menu, and why not? With bangus prepared as intensely delicious as this, it deserves to be served all day. Best dish for me.
Baked Beef Bolognese – P270
So cheesy and creamy! Baked pasta just always brings happy vibes to me.
Honey Balsamic Chicken – P280
This chicken dish explodes with a rich sweet and sour flavor. Served with rice and atchara.
3-Cheese Quesadilla with Beef – P280
Cheese lovers unite! Their quesadilla comes with a choice of only cheese (P240) or with added pork or beef (P280).
Yuyu Sampler – P770
It’s a jumbo meal with pork ribs, chicken, and fish, with fries, corn and carrots, and a dip, all in one plate. Definitely for sharing.
Of course, since Yuyu is also a dessert shop, we had to try their sweets on their ref display.
Praline – P135
Burnt Basque Cheesecake – P125
Blueberry Cheesecake – P100
Strawberry Charlotte – P120
We can’t reach a consensus on the best cake among what we ordered, though. So we’ll just call it a tie between the praline and the burnt basque cheesecake.
All in all, Yuyu was definitely worth the road trip to Tagum!

We ordered the four Secret Menu sandwiches and enjoyed them all, but the Surf ‘n Turf emerged as the star of our meal. We loved the explosion of flavors brought by the combination of a crispy fish patty and a pure beef patty, plus American cheese, shredded lettuce, onions, pickles and special sauce.

]]>The one-minute video is created by Murphy Caballero and Reham Jamaica Nawang. It features four women in different body sizes, relishing the restaurant’s famous “Duterte Roll” maki.
Posted in its Facebook page the video has garnered 39,000 views with about 119 shares and growing.
“Kaizen Davao supports the campaign for equality and positive-body awareness movement all throughout the globe. We aim to actively participate as socially involved members of the community and tell the world that we support the anti-body shaming campaign, that beauty knows no shape and scale,” says Melissa Concha Arandia-Zapanta, proprietor of Kaizen.
Body shaming is the action or practice of humiliating someone by making or making critical comments or gestures about an individual’s body or size. The practice has been known to cause low self-esteem on those ridiculed, eating disorders, social anxiety, poor overall health. Bodily shamed persons are now ashamed of their natural body functions such as eating, sweating and menstruating.
“With increasing awareness about body shaming we encourage the community to join us, take a stand in this call for social change and acceptance,” Zapanta said.
Kaizen Davao: Japanese Street Dining, located along Pryce Road corner Torres Street, specializes in Japanese fusion dishes inspired by the street diners in Tokyo.

]]>Located at the bustling Bricklane Compound at the corner of Palma Gil and Guzman Streets in Obrero, Flavors of Asia is a welcome foodie destination for anyone who wants to savor the best of Asian cuisine in a single sitting. In other words, you don’t have to hop from one resto to the next, just to taste your favorite Asian dishes.
From the outside, you can already see through the glass windows that Flavors of Asia takes on a modern Asian vibe with its wooden floors, patterned wall surfaces, and a horizontal window where you can view the magic in the kitchen.
Speaking of magic, there’s something otherworldly about the dishes in Flavors of Asia — nowhere else in Davao City can you enjoy Chinese soup, Malaysian appetizers, Indonesian noodles, and Filipino fried rice on the same dining table!
Here are some of the signature dishes that you can enjoy at Flavors of Asia:

]]>The post Munchtown Grill Heats Up Torres Food District appeared first on DavaoBase.
]]>Munchtown Grill sits at a budding food district along F. Torres Street, away from the already established dining capital in the same road (where you can see Coco’s Bistro, Harana, and Yummy). The grill restaurant sits right between Café Demitasse and La Bodeguita / Soul Kitchen Co.
The restaurant’s building was a place of residence in the past, and has been converted into an al fresco dining location with a function room on the side. The old cement wall in front of the lot was removed, in order to open up the place for interested diners to come in and enjoy Munchtown Grill.
In keeping with its name, Munchtown Grill has placed food-related street signs at the entrance. That’s a nice touch!
Although the Munchtown brand is popular for sliders and burgers – including its branches at Uptown Place Mall BGC and Vertis North Quezon City – its Torres branch adds grilled food to its impressive menu.
What’s amazing about Munchtown Grill is that you can enjoy a wide range of grilled food choices at rock-bottom prices as low as P12 a stick! Here’s a complete list of grilled favorites that you can experience at Munchtown Grill:
Don’t want to go through the process of decision-making? You can choose to order the Grill Platter with 20 sticks of the restaurant’s best grilled offerings.
If you fancy the bounties of the waters, this Seafood Platter might be the perfect dish for you.
Many of the food faves that Munchtown Diner patrons have come to love are also available in Munchtown Grill. Here are some of the lip-smacking dishes at Munchtown Grill:
These beautiful sliders are made special with 100% Australian beef burger patties and specially baked potato buns that are oh-so-soft. You may order the Australian Mini Burger in solo or 3-piece combo.
Another one of Munchtown’s staples is its hotdog sandwiches, made from all-natural beef. Enjoy these babies in the following variants: Naked Dog, Chili Dog, and Chili & Cheese Dog.
This is one of my favorite French fries preparations in Davao City! The signature Munchtown Fries comes from freshly hand-cut potatoes (note: not frozen, store-bought fries), and garnished with bacon and cheese! It carries a unique flavor that makes you want to ask for seconds.
Culinary adventurers will love the Chili & Cheese Fries, especially if they want more zing to their taters.
Here’s where it gets more interesting: Munchtown Grill recently launched a dish that Korean food lovers will adore – Kimchi Rice! You may enjoy this flavor-packed rice dish by itself, or with a sunny side up egg topping. Either way, Munchtown’s Kimchi Rice will definitely send you screaming “OMO!”.
These two words – “watermelon” and “lemonade” – can already make you feel refreshed. This drink delivers on its promise of bringing a fresh atmosphere to the grill experience.
These decadent milkshakes feel like you’re drinking liquid ice cream! Munchtown milkshakes are ultra-creamy and blended without ice. You may choose from the following flavors: vanilla, peanut butter, strawberry, chocolate, Oreo, and salted caramel.
This is one of the newest additions to their menu, to answer their customers’ clamor for dessert. S’mores bar is a great cap to a tummy-filling meal, and it’s affordable at only P18 a piece.
Munchtown Grill brings a new angle to the already exciting gustatory experience at Torres Street.

]]>The post Battleground: The First Dining and Gaming Cafe in Davao appeared first on DavaoBase.
]]>The folks behind the new foodie destination thought of bringing this unique dining concept to Davao — and why not? Most gamers love eating, and some food lovers like to play games on the side. Food and games fit together quite nicely, and so putting them side by side in a restaurant setting is an awesome idea.
The modern metal-glass building that houses Battleground serves as a perfect landscape for casual dining and serious gaming. The interiors lean towards a more masculine vibe — industrial-type ceiling, black and blue colors, and minimal decorations.
And because it’s designed as a gamer restaurant, there’s a gaming section with 10 high-powered gaming PCs!
Battleground carries the following game titles in their arsenal:
The dishes were designed to cater to casual (read: non-formal) eaters who don’t care about fancy silverware and multi-course meals. The restaurant’s unique menu leans towards the male gamer market, but the dishes are perfect for family and friends as well.
What’s entertaining about the menu is that many of the dishes are presented using game terms: single or team, with upgrades, level ups, and combos.
Here are some of the food offerings at Battleground:
P90 single, P175 team
Upgrades: extra sauce, dip, rice, or salad
Sauces: Barbecue, Sweet & Sour, Chili Spice, Satay, Teriyaki, Extra Hot
Dips: Cheese, Pesto Mayo
Flavorful from meat to bone, their version of Chicken Wings is a perfect match to any gamer’s regular hobby. Make sure to order an extra helping of sauce or dip to complement the wing’s flavors.
P125 single, P210 team
Level ups (sauces): Sweet & Sour, Chili Spice, Teriyaki, Extra Hot
The extremely tender, fall-off-the-bone pork ribs makes this dish a definite champ in the Battleground menu!
P210 single, P400 team
Pizza made of baguettes have become popular in Davao City recently, and this Battleground version is a classic in the making. Don’t be fooled by the “single” serving, because it’s more than enough for 2-3 people.
P135 single
Optional upgrades: rice at P20, extra sauce at P15
Battleground is sticking it out with no-frills food, and tempura is one dish that is not only delicious but is also easy to eat.
Just like its sister restaurant Yolks Flower Cafe + Cupcakery, Battleground offers freezes and smoothies to quench your thirst. Here are some of the ice-blended drinks that I was able to taste:
UPDATE: The folks at Battleground announced on their Facebook page that they’re now offering Milo Dinosaur! I can’t wait to go back and taste that monster of a beverage!
Robin’s Nest, a cake company run by Michelle Robin-Bacsal (of ABS-CBN’s “Maayong Buntag Mindanao“), has been creating some of the most beautiful cakes and cupcakes I’ve ever seen in my life. Aside from being sold at Yolks, Robin’s Nest cupcakes are also available at Battleground.
Looking for a new place where the entire family can stay? The building where Battleground is located will also be the location of an upcoming spa and barber shop. Watch out for updates about this development.
Gamers young and old finally have a haven in Battleground, a place where they can play popular online games and enjoy mouth-watering food.

]]>The post 7 Delicious Ways of Cooking Rice That Dabawenyos Love appeared first on DavaoBase.
]]>If you are a true-blue Dabawenyo — or if you just want to understand how people in Davao like their rice — here are seven mouth-watering ways of cooking rice that are pretty much common fare in Davao City:
Due to the sheer number of ways to cook rice, I excluded the following kinds of cooking rice:
Simply put, the following list includes rice preparations that involve simple cooking or minimal ingredients.
Salivating already? Let’s get to our list!
As the quintessential opposite of bungkag, this method of cooking produces rice that is sticky and sometimes difficult to handle. Most of the rice grains are stuck together, and are cooked through. Some people achieve this by increasing the amount of water during cooking, while others use special rice varieties that produce a sticky consistency when cooked.
If you love the Japanese way of cooking rice, you will probably want this.
Dabawenyos may differ in the degree of burn or sear that they like in their tutong. Some prefer the slightly dry (but still white) burnt rice at the sides of the cooker, while others like the tough brown tutong at the base of the pot.
There’s nothing special in terms of cooking this kind of rice preparation, except that you can only enjoy it at least a half day from the time it gets cooked. Bahaw is basically leftover rice that’s already at room temperature.
As the local version of the American chicken soup, this rice dish has nursed the sick and warmed the cold weather for generations. Its most basic version uses only rice and water, although some restaurants have raised the bar by using soup stock or adding meat and seasoning.
This rice cooking method involves stir-frying cooked rice with a little oil and garlic. Some people like to add seasoning such as salt, pepper, and soy sauce. Others, on the other hand, simply like to revive leftover rice by stir-frying it.
Originating from Cebu, this has become one of the favorite ways of cooking rice for Dabawenyos. You will see most of them in barbecue stalls and food carts along the city streets.
Despite the rise of more culinary varieties in the city, Dabawenyos will probably continue to love rice and enjoy it the way they like to cook it.
Is your favorite rice cooking method not on this list? Sound off below!

]]>The post Sarangani Bay Brings Top Quality Milkfish and Seafood To Davao appeared first on DavaoBase.
]]>Bangus (or milkfish) has become one of the food staples in Filipino dining tables, and is enjoyed in several dishes such as sinigang na bangus, grilled bangus, and fried boneless bangus.
Here are some of the reasons why Sarangani Bay has earned its stripes in the field of seafood supply:
Its wide range of milkfish and packed frozen seafood products are found in the wet goods section of most major supermarkets. That way, you can take home the freshest catch in the comforts of a nearby grocery.
Each pack of its Boneless Milkfish is 99 percent bone-free, and so you can enjoy bangus dishes without having to deal with fish bones. Each product is also vacuum-sealed and labelled for easier identification. On top of this, Sarangani Bay also offers marinated milkfish products so that you can enjoy your favorite bangus as soon as possible.
The company’s Boneless Milkfish products are expertly deboned, vacuum sealed, and blast frozen. That way, you can enjoy the freshness of milkfish as if it came from the sea straight to your plate.
The entire production process involves a principle called “cold chain discipline”. This process involves putting freshly harvested fish in clean and freshly prepared ice in all aspects of production (harvesting, receiving, packing, degutting, deboning, and vacuum sealing). This keeps the quality and freshness of the fish during production.
Sarangan Bay is compliant to ISO 22000:2005, Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP), Current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) and HALAL.
You’ve probably seen the company’s products in local supermarkets and groceries. Here are some of them:
Sarangani Bay recently showcased its seafood products through a special lunch at Peppers Iberica Resto, which was incidentally celebrating its first year of operations. Here are some of the special seafood dishes prepared by Peppers Iberica Resto owners Allen and Chiqui Aportadera and using Sarangani Bay products:
Sarangani Bay has been serving freshness on a plate since 1997, and its impressive product line has already reached the export market, including Japan, Guam, Singapore, Australia, Qatar, Canada, and the U.S.

]]>Dim Yum serves a wide array of delectable dishes, from rice, buns and noodles to pork, chicken, beef, vegetable and seafood viands. They also offer frozen goods, which you can cook at home.
We usually just order plain rice to fully enjoy the flavors of other food items. We were happy to have set aside that ‘rule’ since this special rice preparation tasted delightful yet did not overpower the other dishes.
Dim Yum’s dishes also did not disappoint both in taste and in serving size. We had Pork Asado, Lemon Chicken, Stir Fried Tofu with Pork and Shrimps, and Broccoli with Crabmeat.
It would be tough to choose which was our favorite dish of the meal since we enjoyed them all. If I had to try, though, I’d probably pick the Stir Fried Tofu with Pork and Shrimps. It’s healthy and delicious!
My uncle loves siopao. Whenever available, he orders siopao. Really. Hahaha! I guess he liked his pork asado siopao since he ordered a second one.
The chocolate buchi burst with rich chocolate at first bite! The chocolate was just sweet enough to close a lovely meal. For desserts, they also serve Green Tea Matcha Buchi (P120) and Tropical Fruit Salad (P65).

]]>The post The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf’s 2017 Giving Journals appeared first on DavaoBase.
]]>The CBTL 2017 Giving Journal is available in the following colors/designs:
The unique and heart-warming part about the CBTL journal is that it is designed to remind the user the essence of the season, and that is giving. Each Giving Journal redemption will help the scholars of the Real LIFE Foundation, an organization committed to serving the disadvantaged Filipino youth through educational assistance, character development, and community service. The journal is also meant to help the user start his or her own Giving Journey.
In addition, the 2017 Giving Journal highlights CBTL’s giving commitment through its different partner organizations and beneficiaries. Aside from that, those who have CBTL Giving Journals get to enjoy promo coupons they can use at their favorite CBTL branch!
In its 2017 Giving Journal launch in Davao, guests were asked to help design sugar cookies that will be donated to the kids of SOS Children’s Village Davao. We hope the kids enjoyed eating the cookies just as much as we enjoyed designing them.
1. A minimum single-receipt purchase of a regular or large sized Original Ice Blended®, Espresso/coffee-based, or Tea-based Beverage, Hot Chocolate/Hot Vanilla or CBTL capsules qualifies a customer to get a stamp card that comes with 1 stamp.
2. Each card consists of 12 circles with corresponding purchased drink/item assignments. These are as follows:
(1) Box of CBTL capsules (any flavor) = 2 stamps
(1) CBTL Single Serve Beverage System (Venus, Contata, Kaldi, or Desto) purchase automatically allows the customer to claim his/her 2017 Giving Journal
3. Stamp card must always be presented upon purchase so that a circle may be stamped whenever its corresponding product assignment is purchased.
4. Once all 12 circles are stamped and completed in one stamp card, customer will be able to claim The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf® 2017 Giving Journal at any The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf® branch. Combining of stamps cards is not allowed.
5. The completed stamp card should be presented and surrendered to the branch where The Giving Journal will be claimed. The cashier will punch the stamp card to prevent reuse.
Promo period is from October 22, 2016 to January 8, 2017. Giving Journals may be claimed beginning October 22, 2016 until 60 days after the promo has ended.
(Info on claiming a Giving Journal is taken from CBTL’s official website.)
It’s not so difficult, really. In fact, we so love CBTL’s coffee and tea beverages that we’ve already completed a stamp card in less than 2 weeks from CBTL’s launch in provincial stores. In keeping with the “giving” theme, we gave away our filled stamp card to my brother Julius, who claimed a gray Caring Cup Global journal. Now, we’re on our way to completing another card for another recipient.

Our group had Special Homemade Gyoza for appetizer, Japanese Style Kinilaw for sashimi, and Katsudon, Tendon and Gyudon rice bowls.
I’m not an avid fan of Gyoza, but I liked how Taishozan’s tasted. Also, my friends Andrew and Edu, who are more exposed to this pork appetizer than I am, confirmed that this Gyoza was good.
My Katsudon, which is what I usually order in Japanese restaurants, tasted so much better than most I have had. It had just the right mix of sweet and salty for my taste.
All prices on their menu are subject to 5% service charge.
The restaurant has stylish interiors and several tables to cater to small or big groups of diners. A good number of tables were occupied by couples and groups of friends during our weeknight visit, yet the place has plenty of space for other incoming guests. Their waitstaff are also dressed in Japanese-inspired attire, making the entire Japanese dining experience even more interesting.

Other main products are crispy lechon liempo (P99 solo or P75 sakto meal with iced tea and double rice) and sigchon or sisig lechon (P125 solo or P80 sakto meal with iced tea and double rice). Being fond of sinful pork dishes, we enjoyed our lechon liempo, crispy lechon liempo and sigchon, The serving size left us wanting more, but the taste did not disappoint.
They also serve lechon manok, fried chicken, pork ribs, pakbet, pancit and desserts.
If you’re one with a total disregard for health (Hahaha!) or just want to indulge in a little lechon feast once in a while, this restaurant makes a perfect stop. Just remember to eat moderately.

]]>I ordered Katsudon (deep-fried pork cutlet and eggs cooked in savory broth and served on top of rice), which is my favorite comfort food to order in a Japanese restaurant. Hubby had Chicken Teriyaki (grilled chicken) while niece Diane had Mix Tempura (shrimp tempura, vegetables and squid), both served with rice, soy bean soup and iced tea.
They offer a variety of sushi rolls, including California Maki (P120), Tuna GenSan Dynamite Roll (P120), Digos Mango Crispy Roll (P120), Davao Durian Roll (P145), Davao Malagos Cheese Roll (P145) and Vegetable Roll (P120). We had the Digos Mango Crispy Roll and Malagos Cheese Roll. Both taste great, with the latter being uniquely appetizing. It feels like the cheese is having a party in my mouth!
For dumplings, they serve Pork and Beef Gyoza (P95), Chicken Gyoza (P85) and Okonomiyaki (P155). We had Pork and Beef Gyoza that came in a generous serving size.
They also serve sushi, ramen and other combo sets, such as Tonkatsu, Torikatsu, Butasgoyaki and Tori Karaage, as well as juice and softdrinks.
The place is modest in size and the space in some tables can feel rather tight. Thus, it’s a good idea to be there early, so you can still choose the tables with a little bit of extra space.

]]>The post Mamu’s Recipe for a Smooth and Creamy Leche Flan appeared first on DavaoBase.
]]>With her permission, we’re sharing Mamu’s Leche Flan Recipe here for those who want to try preparing this yummy dessert for the holidays.
10 eggs
300-ml can of condensed milk
370-ml can of evaporated milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup brown sugar
For this leche flan, Mamu used medium-sized eggs, Alaska sweetened condensed milk and Alaska evaporated filled milk to make 2 pans of leche flan.
1. Separate egg yolks from the egg whites, then lightly beat the egg yolks using a fork.
2. Carefully mix the beaten egg yolks with condensed milk and evaporated milk. Add vanilla for aroma.
3. Allow the mixture to pass through a fine strainer or cheesecloth to ensure smooth texture.
4. Caramelize brown sugar on low heat to make syrup.
5. Pour the syrup onto llanera, then slowly pour the milk-egg mixture. Cover llanera with aluminum foil.
6. Place the covered llanera inside a pot partly filled with hot water and turn to medium heat. Cover the pot to allow steam to cook the mixture.
7. Leave the setup for 20 minutes. Stick a toothpick to the leche flan. If no residue sticks on it, turn the heat off.
8. Allow leche flan to cool down to room temperature then refrigerate.
9. Once set, you may turn it over on a plate and serve to family and friends.
I don’t think the photo of the final product did justice to how creamy and delicious this dessert was, but it was gone in a flash so there’s no chance for another set of photos. Hahaha!
Happy leche flan cooking — and eating too, of course!

* liempo (P99)
* pork chop (P110, 2 pieces)

* ribs (P145-P200, depending on size)
For P650, you can enjoy their Grilled Platter, which includes grilled ribs, liempo, chicken bbq, pork bbq, Hungarian sausage, rice and 1.5L Coke. On top of these grilled specialties, they also offer other pork, chicken, fish and beef viands.
You may also enjoy rice meals (P65-P95 per meal) from Sy Bee Tin or milk tea (P50-P90 per cup) from 7Tea with your Nonong Grill food orders. How nice is that, right? It’s like a 3-in-1 restaurant. Well, it really is a 3-in-1 restaurant!
The place is small, but it’s adequately lit and nicely decorated. It also has comfortable seats and a strong WiFi signal. A great plus that needs mentioning is that, during our visit, their staff were pleasant and very helpful.

Burgers and Board Games offers you not WiFi passwords, but good old board games. You get to choose and use 2 board games at a time. If you’re done with the game and want to play another, simply return the board game you’re using and borrow another one. Available games are Monopoly, Boggle, Taboo, Scrabble, Star Wars Battleship, Code Names, Word Factory, Jenga and more.
On our visit, the place was filled with laughter and cheers from players from different tables. Hubby Chito, niece Dianne and I had fun playing a modified version of Taboo – Philippine Edition. It’s ‘modified’ since we can’t play in teams, given that there were only three of us playing. Hahaha!
It’s really a nice shop concept because aside from that fewer people buy board games these days, more and more people get too focused on their mobile devices — even during meals. This allows families and friends to interact more.
Of course, the board games make half of the establishment’s name. Their burgers are made of 100% pure beef patties that are grilled and served with lettuce, tomato, onion and mayonnaise.
Their burger options are:
* Jenga Burger (P120) – with 120g of beef patty
* Operation Cheeseburger (P140) – with 120g of beef patty and cheese
* Taboo Burger (P180) – with 150g of beef patty and cheese
* Boggle Bacon Burger (P220) – with 150g of beef patty, 2 bacon strips and cheese
* Double Stacked Burger (P310) – double 150g of beef patty and cheese
* Cranium Burger (P260) – with 150g of beef patty, bacon, mushroom, cheese and caramelized onion
You may add P30 to get fries and iced tea with your Jenga Burger or Operation Cheeseburger. They also offer coffee (P80-120), milkshakes (P150-160) and soda (P50).
We love games and friendly competitions and so we look forward to going back to Burgers and Board Games with friends and family really soon.

]]>Just this month, the New Davao Famous Restaurant celebrated its Grand Re-opening, promising a better Chinese family-style dining experience for Dabawenyos. The place, still located in Magsaysay Ave. (also known as Uyanguren), now feels more spacious and offers a more modern vibe, but still carries its classic Chinese food offerings that locals have enjoyed for decades.
Also, New Davao Famous now has a cafe on its first level, where they offer different coffee and cake variants. We had a taste of their creamy Mocha Latte during the re-opening.
New Davao Famous has function rooms for special events, including a small function room for 30 people on the 1st floor, a mid-sized function room for 70 people on the 2nd floor and a large event venue that can accommodate 150 people also on the 2nd floor.
More parking spaces would have been an awesome added feature. Nevertheless, we’re happy to see Davao Famous getting a lively makeover, especially since this place carries a lot of childhood and college memories for us. My father used to bring the family here for hearty meals while our college professor used to invite our class for lunch at this place during school breaks.

]]>In one of our few lazy afternoons when we can afford to just drive around the city, we “got lost” in Obrero and found a nice spot to stop and have lunch in — and that is Espetada, House of the Hanging Chicken.
Espetada — named after a Portuguese dish of large chunks of seasoned and skewered meat — offers chicken, seafood and beef soaked in a special marinade, basted in authentic peri peri sauce and cooked skillfully.
They offer 4 Espetada variants, namely Reyna Espetada (boneless chicken thigh), King Espetada (boneless chicken breast), Seafood Espetada (shrimp, squid and fish) and Beef Espetada. Each one is served with 2 side dishes (choose from rice, fries, buttered potatoes, buttered corn and Chef’s salad). All Espetada meals are available for P150.
Other house specialties include Cataplato (P130), Couple Beef Kebab (P95) and Grilled Chicken Feast (P135).
We had the Reyna variant and the beef kebab. Both meals were interestingly tasty. It’s like a Mediterranean feast in the mouth!
The place is small and charming, with mini booths for those who want a tiny bit of privacy. Its fixtures and wall decorations are also adorable. They give a relaxing vibe, although you’re eating slightly spicy to spicy food.
The restaurant also offers appetizers, salads, pasta, sandwiches, other main courses (like Breaded Chicken, Sizzling Gambas, Bisayan Fish Kinilaw, Asim Sinigang, Tropical Curry, Cheesy Beef Caldereta and Sabaw ni Bebot) and desserts.

Desserts are best enjoyed with friends — because you also get to taste what others ordered. Hahaha! We had Lemon Walnut Torte (P180 per slice), Pistachio Sans Rival (P180), Red Velvet Cake (P95), Cashew Sans Rival (P85), Salted Caramel Cake (P75), Choco Caramel Cake (P75) and Yema Cake (P60). Our favorites would have to be the Lemon Walnut Torte, which seems to be their banner product, and the Salted Caramel Cake.
Other cakes available include Dark Chocolate Ganache Cake (P75), Creme Brulee Cake (P75), Oreo Cream Cheese (P85), Triple Tableron Cream Cake (P110), Fresh Strawberry Short Cake (P120), Banana Nutella Walnut Torte (P180) and Walnut Banana Caramel Torte (P180).
Happy Cakes has comfortable seats, attractive wall decor and free WiFi. It’s a nice place to be by yourself with just a book and a slice of cake to keep you company. It’s also a great place to hang out with friends, although the shop closes at 10 PM, so it’s somehow bitin since that’s usually the time conversations get deeper. *wink wink*
They accept cake orders for parties and events. They simply request that customers place their orders a day before pick-up.

]]>The post Yolks Flower Cafe + Cupcakery: Dainty, Decadent, Delicious! appeared first on DavaoBase.
]]>The restaurant is a fusion of passions by Yolks owners Michelle Robin (host of ABS-CBN’s Maayong Buntag Mindanao and owner of Robin’s Nest) and Chiqk Ybanez (owner of the exquisite flower shop Eufloria), who both found a perfect opportunity to combine their love for flowers into a full-service restaurant. The result is Yolks, a floral-themed restaurant that offers unique fusion dishes, decadent cakes and pastries, and flower arrangements.
The cafe’s interiors perfectly capture the theme that Yolks wants to convey. From splashes of pastel colors and floral patterns in the walls to several flowers and plants adorning the restaurant, it’s no surprise that Yolks wants to attract people who love flowers and nature. As I entered the store, I instantly felt like being in a tea party or a flower shop.
Check out some of these flowers by Eufloria, now on display and being sold at Yolks:
Michelle’s cakes and cupcakes are the stars of the Yolks food show, as her pastry creations already serve as table centerpieces and talking points. Check out this awe-inspiring floral cake: the toppings may look like real flowers, but they are actually made of edible icing! The basket weave design surrounding the cake completes the overall ensemble of the cake.
Yolks also offers cupcakes in different cake flavors, fillings, and toppings. Here are some of the cupcakes available at Yolks:
Aside from flowers and cakes, Yolks also serves filling appetizers and main course dishes. Here are some of the dishes that you can enjoy inside the floral-inspired cafe:
This particular dish went viral on social media because of its unique look. Where else in the city have you seen a pepperoni pizza with a black crust? The color comes from squid ink but it doesn’t affect the aroma or taste of the pizza. I’m a fan of pepperoni pizza and unique food preparations, and so I really enjoyed their black pizza.
With its flavorful and cottony-soft meat, Yolks Pork Ribs is a knockout winner! This thick slab of pork ribs is presented on top of herb-infused mashed potatoes to bring sensory and gustatory satisfaction in a single plate. You may choose to order a cup of rice with this dish, but the mashed potatoes already puts the ribs to a whole new level.
This sinfully delicious pasta feast packs a mean punch in terms of flavor, and Yolks didn’t scrimp on ingredients for this one-of-a-kind pasta. Their version of seafood pasta contains shrimps, calamari, crab fat sauce, and cheese. It’s highly recommended to squeeze some lemon juice onto the dish to balance its richness.
This pasta preparation elevates the Pinoy tuyo into a classy dish with sun-dried tomatoes and dried herring, and tossed in olive oil. This gourmet tuyo pasta is a welcome addition to the pasta offerings in Yolks (and in Davao City).
Infused with intense flavors and cooked to perfection, Yolks’ version of peppered rib-eye steak is designed for the pickiest of meat lovers. This dish is perfectly seasoned, and comes with a complimentary dip of rosemary-infused compound butter.
I was excited to see this dish on the table, not only because of its uniqueness but also due to the fact that it’s not in the menu yet. Pizza and vegetables may not sound good together, but they work excellently in this veggie-based pizza. I love pesto, and so my salivary glands were jumping for joy as I took a bite of this pesto-based pizza. It really tastes amazing, even in the absence of meat.
This salad preparation uses romaine and iceburg lettuce, tomato, onion, cucumber, corn, carrots, and honey balsamic vinaigrette on the side.
For fans of the world-famous Waldorf salad, Yolks also offers their version, composed of romaine lettuce, apples, grapes, and walnuts. The ingredients are flavored with chantilly dressing.
Yolks also serves rich and exciting beverages such as their take on Matcha Coffee (P135), as well as a wide selection of frappes and smoothies. Some of the cold drinks that we tasted include Choco-Hazelnut Frappe (P165), Nutty Caramel Frappe (P165), Mocha Frappe (P135), Choco-Peanut Butter Freeze (P180), and Tiramisu Freeze (P180).
Yolks Flower Cafe + Cupcakery may sound like just another coffee shop or dining establishment, but lovers of flowers and desserts will probably disagree. Yolks brings a new kind of dining experience that is unlike any in Davao City — dainty, decadent, and definitely delicious!

It was my first time to see a mooncake wrapped so decadently, and this special mooncake by Marco Polo Davao is a fitting kick-off to the festival.

]]>It’s a delight to see this exciting food trend push through in cupcakes as well. In recent years, the popularity of cupcakes has risen dramatically, mainly due to the new flavors introduced. On top of that, customized cupcakes are now slowly becoming trendy and highly sought after.
Sweet Perfections, a cupcake shop based in Davao City, is in the business of creating fancy and unique cupcakes to tickle the fancy of dessert lovers. Its bestsellers include choco moist cupcake, vanilla cupcake, and red velvet cupcake with cream cheese frosting.
Prices for the cupcakes start at P600 per dozen. Souvenir cupcakes are priced at P80 a piece (with a minimum order of 50 cupcakes). Meanwhile, its premium cupcake flavors are matcha green tea cupcake and Nutella cupcake, which are priced at P550 per dozen.
Check out these DavaoBase-themed cupcakes that Sweet Perfections created for us. The base cupcakes were very soft and flavorful, and I was thinking twice about eating the custom fondant decorations because they look so amazing!
The cupcake shop accepts payments thru BPI, Cebuana, Western Union or Palawan Express. Additional P100 handling fee will be charged for meetups, and orders are processed only after payment. The folks at Sweet Perfections accept door-to-door deliveries and surprise deliveries, the cost of which will depend on the location.

]]>Although pomelo isn’t as popular as the king of fruits, the citrus fruit is able to stand its ground as a very delicious and mouth-watering produce of Davao City. Not only that, now that many people have discovered different ways to enjoy durian — through durian-based drinks and desserts — why not try the same with pomelo?
This is the reason behind Marco Polo Davao’s creation of Oh! Pomelo, a special signature fruits-based menu that incorporates the local citrus fruit into elegant dishes.
Here’s a sneak peek at the exquisitely delectable dishes in the Oh! Pomelo menu:
Oh! Pomelo is available at Marco Polo Davao until September 30, 2016.
—————————–
Meanwhile, the hotel also recently unveiled its newest beverage offering: the Earl Grape Iced Tea. This luxurious beverage combines the richness of loose earl grey tea, seedless green grapes, and Elderflower syrup in one refreshing and delicious drink.
Earl Grape Iced Tea is served in a glass containing cubes of iced earl grey tea and Elderflower syrup, with complimentary Turkish delight on the side. The drink is served from a unique u-shaped carafe, which adds to the elegance of the refreshing beverage.
Earl Grape Iced Tea is available at Marco Polo Davao for P275+, and it’s already good for two people (or one very thirsty person!).

]]>The post Potions Grille and Restobar Unveils Fusion Cuisine appeared first on DavaoBase.
]]>Potions Grille and Restobar started out as a beverage and liquor bar at Plaza de Bole, a commercial complex beside Angel Funeral Homes. The establishment has evolved from selling liquid refreshments to offering main course dishes and other tummy fillers.
The restaurant opened last August 3, 2016, expanding to twice its original floor area to accommodate more guests and offer more spaces to dine and drink. The spankin’ new interior design follows a traditional homey approach, with wooden seats and tables, as well as native-inspired walls.
We dropped by Potions on the early evening of its opening day. The place was well-lit including the bar shelf, which carried different kinds of popular alcohol brands to be used in mixing the drinks at Potions.
Being conservatives in the field of bars and drinking, we opted for their juices instead.
Fruity Rita is a delicious citrus mocktail that looks absolutely stunning in a tall glass and sugar rim.
Potion Juice is a unique mix of calamansi, cucumber and pineapple that refreshes and cleanses the palate quite well.
Potions offers a wide range of dishes for meal starters, main course, desserts, beverages, and snacks. Here are some of the dishes that we were able to taste:
We started the evening with four samplers:
I couldn’t pass up the chance to try their take on one of my favorite pork dishes. I was surprised to see a huge serving of Lechon Kawali, delectably plated with rice, mashed kamote, and vinegar. Even without the vinegar dip, the Lechon Kawali was very flavorful. I especially enjoyed the ultra-crispy skin that held much of the flavors that I love in traditional lechon kawali.
I have tried many versions of baby back ribs, but this particular one can definitely outclass those from other restaurants. BBQ Back Ribs is a feast on a plate, with grated cheese on top, as well as rice, mashed kamote, and coleslaw on the side.
This dish is a solid winner in terms of overall foodie experience. The dish was cooked to absolute perfection; you can literally take the cottony-soft meat off the bones using a fork. Its barbecue sauce was infused well into the meat, leading to a very satisfying meal that any meat lover would enjoy.
Nothing beats a decadent chocolate dessert to cap off an amazing dinner. Potions’ Chocolate Ganache is elegantly plated with criss-crossed streaks of chocolate and caramel syrups. More importantly, it’s the sublime texture of the chocolate ganache that really takes the cake. This dessert is rich, exquisite, and smooth — exactly how you would want chocolate cake to be.
I’m not sure if it’s a misspell or a brand endorsement, but Potion Ala Monde is a playful dessert that combines chocolate chip cookie, ice cream, whipped cream, wafer stick, peanut butter cup, marshmallows, sprinkles, and chocolate syrup. This is a sure hit for kids and the young-at-heart.
Potions Grille and Restobar is a welcome sighting and foodie destination for those looking for someplace to hang out within the downtown area. It’s open daily from 10:30 AM to 2:00 AM, but the restaurant section closes at 9:00 PM to give way to the bar. Groups who want to host private events and gatherings may use the restaurant’s function room for P3,500 consumable. The room can accommodate about 15 people, and comes with a videoke system.

]]>We recently visited Port Cafe at Gaisano Mall of Toril for a quick dinner after watching a movie. I was impressed with the spacious and brightly lit interiors, which looked way better than its original store at Gaisano Mall of Davao along J.P. Laurel Avenue.
Port Cafe’s signature dishes are also available in its Toril branch, including its Entrees, Captain’s Meals, and Famous Meals. As meat lovers, we dined on Grilled Pork Belly and Grilled Pork Chop.
Port Cafe is a welcome entry to the food scene at Gaisano Mall of Toril, as the shopping complex currently has only a handful of dining choices. I’m excited to see the development of this establishment as it aims to capture the urban market of Toril.

]]>The post TAPS: Revisiting The Breakfast Hub of Davao appeared first on DavaoBase.
]]>I was already happy with the dishes that TAPS has offered for many years, despite being a simple and unassuming al fresco restaurant. However, its chain of restaurants has undergone a major facelift in recent years, including a more modern branding. The Duterte branch, for example, is now fully airconditioned and brightly lit.
I also noticed that the signage and posters look more vibrant and attuned to modern design. The bright colors of red and yellow will make you feel welcome (and possibly lead you to eat more!).
But enough of the comments on the restaurant’s upgraded interiors and let’s cut to the chase. The more important question is: How’s the food?
My all-time TAPS favorite is lekasilog, which hasn’t really changed in terms of taste. That’s a good thing, because this exact same flavor brings me back to my childhood days when I first experienced TAPS. Meanwhile, for a first-time diner, TAPS lekasilog will always be a knockout winner.
The updated signage at the front of TAPS Duterte seems to be working, as I found myself ordering balbacua for the first time. Their version of balbacua is excellently done — juicy and fall-off-the-bones meat sitting in hot and ultra-flavorful soup stock. It’s a perfect dish to break a sweat in cool evenings.
As a fitting end to the meal, we ordered Banana Cobbler as dessert. This dish is part of the several banana desserts at TAPS, which we featured in 2014. To give you an idea, Banana Cobbler is basically hot banana-infused pastry topped with chocolate-drizzled vanilla ice cream.
I’m sure I share the general Dabawenyo feeling of happiness over the fact that TAPS has survived the test of time, continued to serve our favorite breakfast dishes, and upgraded their branding and facilities. As I conclude this article, I’m counting the days until my next taste of TAPS lekasilog.
