Surveillance Cameras: It’s About Taking Control

Last week, I had a short discussion with a friend about how difficult it is to leave one’s baby to a nanny, who practically is a stranger before you hired her. With all the horrible things we see on TV about how babies are maltreated by their own nannies, mothers nowadays have more reasons to worry.

Some parents install Surveillance Cameras in their homes to be able to check what the nanny has been doing with their kids while they were away. Although this is more reactive than proactive, the videos help in protecting kids from further abuse. This allows parents to see untoward events early enough and to terminate the nanny’s services as soon as possible.

Of course, we know that surveillance cameras are not only to monitor a nanny’s activities. Several hotels, banks, convenience stores and even schools have cameras installed in strategic locations to monitor activities within their premises. For many companies, the installation of Surveillance Cameras not only helps in preventing employee theft, but also in monitoring employee behavior and performance.

This can also assist in avoiding incidences of harassment or other malicious events in the workplace. Just recently, the Cebu Provincial Government announced the installation of a surveillance camera in the building of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP)-Cebu City Chapter to monitor activities in its canteen, which has been reported to be frequented by a number of young ladies at night.

Certainly, technology has afforded us the ability to take control of the situations with the use of surveillance systems. This is, I guess, the basis why investigative shows are such big hits right now. It’s now all about people empowerment. It’s about taking control.
